Treatment of shock

Treatment of shock

After diagnosing the presence and aetiology of shock, treatment should be initiated to rapidly restore systemic and regional perfusion in order to prevent ongoing shock and cellular injury. Analysis of the haemodynamic variables described previously should be used to focus therapeutic treatment on restoration of oxygen transport balance, preload, contractility, and afterload. The commonly used treatment modality for each of these four requirements is

shown in the graphic. In most cases of shock, there is a component of decreased preload necessitating administration of fluids. urther pharmacological treatment mainly consists of antihypotensive drugs (inotropes and/or vasoconstrictors).
