Loading dosing

Loading dosing

When giving a drug via an intravenous infusion it takes over three half-lives to get within 10% of the target therapeutic concentration. Clinicians therefore use loading doses for drugs with very long half-lives to more rapidly reach desired concentrations. A loading dose is a single intravenous injection (called a bolus) that is given at the start of the infusion to get the concentration in serum at the desired level.
